Southwark is a borough of contrasts - from areas of wealth and business success (especially in the north of the borough) to some of the most deprived parts of the UK.
- 7.5% of the population have arrived in Southwark from elsewhere in Britain in the past 12 months.
- 2% of the population has recently arrived from abroad.
- Over 41% of students speak English as a second or additional language.
- Nearly 40% of the population comes from the Black and minority ethnic communities.
- Each year around one in five primary school students will move schools. In secondary schools around one in eight students changes schools each year.
- 45% of students achieve five or more GCSEs at grades A*-C, compared to a national average of 50%.
- More than 40% of the borough is covered by a current or planned regeneration area.
- Unemployment in Southwark is 6.8% compared to 5.6% nationally.
