Volunteer Primary Learning Partners 

 

Would your company like to make a significant difference to a young person’s future by participating in something fun and rewarding?

 

Southwark Education Business Alliance’s Volunteer Primary Learning Partners programme could offer you just what you need. 

 

How can you help?

Employee volunteers spend half an hour each week during their lunchtime helping in a Southwark primary school.

 

Aim:
·          To support individual pupils who need extra assistance with their reading and/or maths

 

Activities:

·        Helping a student with one-to-one reading and discussing books

·        Playing games involving literacy or;

·        Playing maths games as an enjoyable experience

 

Benefits to students:

·        Improves reading or numeracy levels

·        Increases confidence and self-esteem

·        Provides regular one-to-one attention from interested and committed adults

·        Helps to raise career aspirations by exposure to positive role models from the world of work

 

Benefits to employee volunteers:

·          Explore new situations and challenges and learn new skills

·          A chance to give back to the community and watch a child learn and grow in confidence

·          Have some fun and a break during their work day

·          An opportunity for team building with work colleagues

 

Qualities sought:

·          Enjoy the company of children

·          Enjoy reading, chatting and playing games

·          Patience and empathy

 

What happens?

·          Your company recruits employees to participate in the scheme

·          Southwark EBA will set up the partnership by matching your company to a Southwark primary school

·          Southwark EBA will run an hour long training session during a lunchtime at your offices

·          Training offers practical ways on how to support children with reading and maths and provides important information on child protection issues

·          Southwark EBA handles the Criminal Records Bureau checks which are required when working with young people.

·          Southwark EBA provides ongoing support to the company and school partners

Commitment

·          A regular commitment of one hour per week (including travel) for a minimum of two terms, giving the volunteers time to build up relationships with the children and to see the progress they are making.
