More London 'Telectroscope'
23 May - 15 June 2008

Southwark schools are invited to visit The Telectroscope on the More London site, adjacent to The Scoop at More London, to experience a unique audio/visual/spatial treat:

"Very few people know of the existence of a secret transatlantic tunnel running between London and New York. The brainchild of an eccentric Victorian engineer, Alexander Stanhope St George, it was never completed and St George died, bankrupt and insane, his life's work abandoned. Over a century later, the engineer's great-grandson, Paul St George, discovered the location of the tunnel as well as his ancestor's plans for an invention called a Telectroscope: an astonishing device allowing people on one side of the world to see right through the tunnel from one end to the other…

Artichoke is the company that brought The Sultan's Elephant to London in 2006.  Its latest project is inspired by Victorian dreamers: men who imagined the impossible, from suspension bridges to metal steamships, from canals through the countryside to viaducts through mountain ranges.  Now it is collaborating with the artist Paul St George to create a pair of telectroscopes that will be open to the public in London and New York, providing an extraordinary window across the world…"

Southwark EBA 'Future Entrepreneurs' film available online

In 2007, a challenge was set!  Over 100 students from London Borough of Southwark, UK schools were invited to create a business idea.  In teams, the students thought up their own business ideas, they were supported through a series of workshops and training.  Business experts gave their time freely to inspire and train the students.  The workshops included:

  • marketing
  • finance
  • team building
  • event planning
  • creating business plans
  • presentation skills

The teams then developed their ideas and pitched their business to a panel of business experts, including: Lord Herman Ouseley; Joy Nichols MBE (who won the HRH Queen's Award for Enterprise); Mei Sim Lai OBE from the Institute of Directors City of London; and restaurateur Kelvin Macdonald (Bankside Restaurant).  The business experts were only able to fund four teams! With a budget of up to £250 per team.

Southwark Education Business Alliance commissioned this project which was delivered in collaboration with John Barkus.  Thanks to the generous support of all participants, our innovative approach to teaching Enterprise produced some inspired results from the students.

Watch the video* and see how they got on!

Work Experience Feedback 2007
(01/10/2007)

In 2007, 2000 Key Stage 4 students from the London Borough of Southwark attended a work experience placement.

We have taken a 10% (206 students) sample from this group to find out what feedback they would like to give us about this experience.

On the whole their experience was extremely positive with new skills being learnt.  However, it is clear that for a small minority of students (8%) problem solving was not tackled through their work experience programme.  We will need to encourage this skill to be used in both the preparation for work experience and the diary.

The same percentage of students (8%) felt that the experience would not make them work harder in lessons or on their coursework, but maybe they are already working as hard as the can!!

The highest negative response (15%) was to do with being clearer about what they want to do as a career.

This is not surprising as we have always considered work experience to be a skill based activity rather than career orientated experience.
