Each year we team up with local employers to offer more than 2000 placements to Southwark students. For most it's their first real taste of the world of work and a valuable learning experience.

Work experience placements are usually for two weeks. The aim of the placements are to:

  • let students experience the world of work.
  • let students learn in a new and different context
  • help students acquire and apply key skills for employability.

Each student is matched against a 'job description' and interviewed before being accepted. They are closely monitored throughout their two weeks with the company and they record their achievements in a special portfolio.

Hundreds of local businesses offer work experience placements to Southwark students. 'If it wasn't easy to arrange we wouldn't get involved,' says Will Anslow of Whitehall Clothiers. 'I make one of my team responsible for each student while they are with us. That works well.'

What happens?
Each school or student contacts the employer directly to arrange a placements.

The EBA maintains a database of placements to ensure health and safety for every student. There are currently 2000 placements registered on the database.

Employers' premises are inspected and various documentation is checked (e.g. evidence of up to date Employer's Liability Insurance).

Placement providers also need to appoint a workplace supervisor for work experience students to plan and implement a worthwhile programme for the students.

There is no need for any specific training. However, the suitability and safety of placements are always checked.
