At the beginning of this month 170 young people from Southwark had the chance to meet with local employers and find out more about available careers. Working with local employers, we secured 20 business visits across various industries to help students get a feel for professional working environment as well as the industry they are interested in.
Various employers hosted groups of students for two hours in the morning and afternoon sessions. We worked with professionals from IT/Software, Communications, Marketing, Construction and Architecture, Law and even the charity sector to name a few.
The experience wasn’t exciting only for the students but also for the employers who shared their views of the sessions with us.
“I just want to say they were a great class. I have received nothing but positive feedback from the speakers this morning on all of the students. They asked great questions, were really engaging and really focussed they all have a bright future ahead. I hope they found the day inspiring and hope to be able to accommodate work placements for them in the near future”

“It was a pleasure to host St Thomas the Apostle as part of our ongoing Schools Outreach programme, where we aim to engage with schools, explain what we do and offer information on upcoming internships, apprentices and our graduate schemes.
As part of this visit, we provided the opportunity for students to ask questions to a panel of staff who had gained employment through various routes. We had an open and honest conversation, where in response to student’s questions we spoke about the best parts of working at Ofcom, and the challenges, as well as the work life balance and even salaries. We finished the day with an activity thinking about online harms and what more could be done to protect people from harmful online content, particularly in the case of young people.
We look forward to welcoming more students in the future”

“The business visits organised with the EBA have provided fantastic opportunities for our team to engage with young students and provide a glimpse into working life within the marketing industry. Ultimately, the students learn about an area that was previously unfamiliar to them and hopefully broadening the range of career options available to them in the future.”
