Southwark Scholarship Scheme

The Southwark Scholarship Scheme is supporting our commitment and vision for a Fairer Future

The Southwark Scholarship scheme began in 2011 helping young people pursue higher education. Since then we’ve supported over 100 students covering the full cost of tuition fees for their chosen undergraduate degree.

Our scholars have gone on to careers in Education, Law, Medicine, Engineering as well as other fields in the Creative Arts industry. By investing in the Southwark Scholarship Scheme, we hope to narrow the pay and skills gap between young people from financially challenged households compared to young people from privileged backgrounds; thus supporting Southwark’s commitment and vision for a Fairer Future.

Eligibility Criteria (Who can apply)

Please apply if you’re interested in going to university this year and meet all of the eligibility criteria listed below:

  • under 25 years old
  • must come from a household with a combined income of less than £28,000 per annum
  • proven record of being a resident of Southwark for a minimum of the past 3 years (students placed outside of the borough temporarily by Southwark’s Housing Department are eligible subject to evidence)
  • have legal status in the UK with indefinite leave to remain
  • must be entering higher education for the first time
  • must have a proven record of active engagement and positively contributing to the community in Southwark
  • must have a good record of academic achievement
  • must have a UCAS offer from their chosen university to start the course in autumn 2024
  • must have a genuine willingness to want to return the investment by doing something back for Southwark’s community

The scholarship is only awarded to a limited number of students each year. To be considered for the scholarship, you will have to meet all the requirements above and evidence for income assessment will be requested.

When can I apply?

Applications for the academic year 2024-25 will open on 1st April with submission deadline by midnight 31st May. An “Apply” button at the bottom of this page will take you to the application form during this time.

How should I prepare for the application?

As part of the application process all candidates are required to submit a community statement explaining their involvement in the community, motivations to study their chosen subject and how this will contribute to their community work once they graduate. We recommend you write your statement in a Word document first and then copy paste this into the application form.

To assess candidates’ eligibility we are also asking for details of academic performance and current community involvement. As part of this we require details of two referees who can speak on the candidate’s academic aptitude (a teacher who knows the candidate well) and community work (a community figure, neighbour, teacher). We require two different referee contacts who are not related to the candidate.

To demonstrate financial eligibility for the scholarship, all candidates are required to submit proof of their household income. It will help if you gather this information together and have it available in advance.

The deadline for applications to the Southwark Scholarship Scheme was midnight on 31st May. The form is no longer available for applications this year.
